StepUp Ministry

Program

The purpose of the StepUP program is to provide second chances for those committed to living independent, responsible, and productive lives. We are motivated to do so out of a faith perspective that challenges us to simultaneously uplift the God-given potential of each individual while recognizing that individuals cannot grow apart from community. StepUP is a community where participants, volunteers, and staff affirm strengths, address shortcomings, and learn skills that lead to self-sufficiency.

Step 1 - Orientation

All those interested in entering the StepUP program are required to participate in an orientation/workshop experience. Participants must be 21 years of age or older and committed to the goal of self-sufficiency. This week-long experience is comprised of a general orientation meeting on Monday mornings (held at First Baptist Church), a one-on-one skills assessment interview with staff (during which applications are filled out and resumes developed) on Tuesdays/Wednesdays, followed by a series of workshops on Thursday and Friday mornings at White Memorial (topics include: communication skills, conflict resolution, reflective listening, dress for success, interviewing skills, and job retention). Candidates for the StepUP program must attend all meetings and pass a standardized point system (evaluating interest and commitment) to move forward in the program.
